Five Women’s & LGBTQIA+ Charities You Can Support This Holiday Season

By Amy Hanna, Production/Radio Promo Coordinator

There are many things to focus on during the holiday season: it’s a time for family, a time for reflection, a time for joy, a time for stress. It is hard not to be bogged down by to-do lists, consumed by the thought of tying up all possible loose ends before the new year turns. We at 6/8 encourage you to take a deep breath, to congratulate yourself on all you’ve done this year, all you’re doing right this moment, and, most importantly, to center yourself in a direction that will lead to your own continued growth, and the growth and betterment of the communities around you.

It’s been a hard year. Yet in the thick of all the tragedy and injustice, there has been an unmissable outcry from women and LGBTQIA+ people across the world — a cry for all to listen, to spread the word, and to help rather than continue to hurt. We salute all of the courageous people who shared their stories using the hashtag #MeToo, all of the women of color who work tirelessly to create a better future for us all amidst vehement silencing, and to all women and the LGBTQIA+ community at large who are still fighting to convince the world that they are worthy of respect. Whether you belong to one of these communities or not, there is a desperate need for continued support toward causes for women and for people in the LGBTQIA+ community. Below are five amazing causes to donate to this year, to help bolster the resources of these communities and amplify  repeatedly silenced voices.

Planned Parenthood

To quote their website, Planned Parenthood is “one of the nation’s leading providers of high-quality, affordable health care, and the nation’s largest provider of sex education.” Continued legislation is acting against Planned Parenthood to provide women with the resources necessary for their sexual and overall health. It is of top priority to protect organizations like Planned Parenthood, so that they can continue to equip women with the education and resources they need for their health.

RAINN

RAINN is the largest charity organization against sexual violence, and their resources include educational guides as well as crisis hotlines for victims of sexual violence. Tori Amos, one of our favorite singer-songwriters, was the first spokesperson for RAINN, after her own experiences with sexual assault and wanting to help create a safe space for the women who would share their experiences with her at shows. This year in particular has seen an increase in awareness of just how prevalent and destructive sexual violence is, and how rampant it has been running across the world, unchecked. We need to continue this dialogue in 2018, and more than that, work to support and comfort victims, while educating the world at large that sexual violence of any kind shall never be tolerated.

Urgent Access Fund for Women’s Human Rights

Trans POC and WOC have been working tirelessly at the forefront of human rights causes this year, and their activism is helping to reverse the threats made to their lives and work every single day. Urgent Access Fund for Women’s Human Rights acts quickly to equip female and LGBT rights movements worldwide with the resources they need to make huge gains for these marginalized communities. The Urgent Access Fund for Women’s Human Rights is crystal clear about its support the rights of Muslim, black, brown, queer, trans, immigrant women and that violence against any one of these groups has intersectional effects.

The Ali Forney Center

LGBTQIA+ youths are 8 times more likely to experience homelessness than their counterparts. Because of their subjection to violence and trauma without any support or resources, 62% of LGBTQIA+ youths attempt suicide. The oppression of marginalized groups is intersectional, and these statistics prove that. The mission of The Ali Forney Center is to “protect LGBTQIA+ youths from the harms of homelessness and empower them with the tools needed to live independently.” The Ali Forney Center provided the statistics above, among many others about homeless LGBTQIA+ youths.

These are only five of the countless amazing charities you can support this year. Donating to any one of these will help to ease the struggles women and LGBTQIA+ people face. Still, there are many more ways to help. We encourage you to seek out volunteer opportunities in your area this holiday season. Happy Holidays from all of us at 6/8 Music, and thank you for working with us to make a better world.
