14 Fabulous Females | Valentine’s Day 2018

Happy Valentine’s Day! There’s no better way to spend Valentine’s Day than to celebrate the people you love the most, and for us here at 6/8 Music, female artists are those people. We thought it was so serendipitous that Valentine’s Day falls on #WCW, a.k.a. Woman Crush Wednesday this year, as it gives us the opportunity to shamelessly promote some incredible female artists we’re crushing on. We’ve selected 14 artists to feature this fine February 14th (try saying that 5 times fast), and they range from pop, to R&B, to country, and beyond. Some are friends, 6/8 alums, and some are brand new talent we’ve just discovered. Learn about all 14 of these fabulous ladies, their music, and all of their accomplishments, and be sure to check out our Spotify V-Day Playlist featuring our favorite songs by these incredible indie female artists.

If you love this feature (or any of these lovely ladies), please use one or more of the following hashtags so we can connect! #14FF #WCW #VDay #68MusicNY

MarcelaCruz21. Marcela Cruz

Marcela Cruz makes rich R&B music for the local #girlboss. The Boston songstress has been racking up tons of attention, including a viral music video (“Don’t Know Why”), a feature on The Steve Harvey Show, and multiple Boston Music Award nominations. “Go Awf”, a favorite from us ladies at 6/8 Music, inspires so much confidence and energy, so be sure to check out the amazingly fun track on our playlist below!

meghann-wright22. Meghann Wright

Artist, entrepreneur (at The City & The Heart and Grind Ethos), mother–you name it, Meghann Wright is doing it (and very well, we might add!) Meghann works tirelessly to support female artists in various aspects of their careers. And if that’s not enough, this New York-based pop country artist has a beautiful, homey voice that swells around seriously catchy melodies. Look out for her new song “California” out February 23!

Veronica-Fusaro-by Tobias Sutter3. Veronica Fusaro

“Ice Cold” may be the name of Veronica Fusaro’s EP she released last week, but we think it’s FIRE! This singer/songwriter is a Swiss pop sensation and is now gracing the rest of the world with her music as well. While we’re jamming to Better If I Goin the office, she’s performing at the Olympics in Korea! You go, girl.

RabasiJoss4. Rabasi Joss

Grammy-Award nominated multimedia producer/archivist, Brooklyn-based soul/jazz/folk singer-songwriter, Rabasi Joss, is a powerhouse artist to be reckoned with. She was the mastermind behind a 10-year book and CD project called the Caffè Lena History Project, and she has her own company, Arbo Radiko. Joss is also a 6/8 Music alum! We were thrilled to have been a small part of her most recent album release.  The title of the album, Heliotrope, describes how plants and flowers reach for the light when they’re exposed to the sun.  With it’s warm honey-vibes, soothing vocals, and undeniably soulful songs, you’ll feel like you’re bathing in sunlight too when you listen.

BrittanyClarke5. Brittany Clarke

Brittany Clarke brings her soulful ballads to life on her most recent EP, Slowly, which was recorded from her home studio in the heart of New York City.  This Toronto native perfectly blends neo-soul, pop, and blues together for a unique sound. We’re vibin’ on the new “Reprieve (Acoustic Sessions),” a more recently released acoustic version of the original, which we’ve included in our Spotify V-Day Playlist. We’re crushing hard.

Jess + Danny of Babetown.6. Jessica Leibowitz (of Babetown)

Fresh off a feature on WFUV radio’s coveted “Alternate Side,” and with a brand new self-titled EP, Jessica Leibowitz of Babetown was recently our #WCW FEATURE INTERVIEW Spotlight Artist! In short, if you haven’t read the interview, you should, and if you haven’t listened to Babetown, the new album, you should. We made it easier by including her dreamy new, incredibly catchy indie pop single “Swoon” on our 14 Fabulous Females for Valentine’s Day Playlist.  You’ll be swooning for Jessica in no time!

MaddieAssel27. Maddie Assel

Maddie Assel has a sweet voice that pulls you in right from the start. We first fell in love with her raw live performances on YouTube, followed by her shiny pop single “Shouldn’t Have Let Me Go,” featuring Young Hef and Siegz.  It’s a bubblegum gem with ear-worm chords, pop-reggae keyboard bops, and delicious vocals reminiscent of Jessie J, Sia, Rihanna, with a B.o.B-style rap solo in the middle. Maddie is releasing a brand-new EP today that features 3 songs for Valentine’s Day, so keep an eye out on her social media for that. We can’t wait to get caught up in it!

8. Eleanor Dubinsky

Eleanor Dubinsky’s worldly sound ignites the senses and opens the spirit. The notion to open one’s heart inspired her upcoming album, Soft Spot Of My Heart, which is set to release next month. Her music is calming on the mind and intrigues the spirit, and has been featured on MTV, Lifetime, and Animal Planet, ads for American Express and international radio! Ms. Dubinsky will be having her highly anticipated album release concert at Joe’s Pub in NYC, on April 10, 2018; click here for tickets.

Brooklyn babe Paulina Vo sends us daydreaming about warm, sandy beaches and a place not-so-cold-and-disgusting with her mellow, airy sounds. throughout her four albums.  In addition to recording albums, she scored a documentary last summer and wrote music for an indie web series which in turn was nominated for Best Original Song. 10. Monica da Silva (of Complicated Animals)

Monica da Silva is one half of Complicated Animals, a catchy Dream Pop band from LA with a brand new single “Show Me.” The Lorde-esque song is an “80s-inspired, synth-based dream,” and we certainly agree. With lyrics “show me that you want me,” the song is sexy, and couldn’t be more fitting for today’s  Valentine’s Day. Extra bragging rights: “Back To His Girl,” a solo recording by Monica, is featured in the movie Lady Bird.  How cool is that?!

Sonali (1).jpg11. Sonali

Sonali is a New York-based pop singer-songwriter, but even more than that, Sonali is a fighter. The singer has recently returned from a two-year hiatus from music after being diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease. But she hasn’t let anything stop her, and she’s is back with a vengeance (and some amazing tunes!)  We love Sonali’s creed for increased representation in music, as she as an Indian-American giving voice to her community with her music. Sonali is set to release “Turn It Around”, her newest single, this Friday, February 16th, so be sure to keep an eye out on her socials for it!

Emia12. ÊMIA

Miami-based singer/songwriter/producer Anh Le is the mind behind ÊMIA, an impressive glitchy bedroom pop project with a futuristic twist. This incredible talent started her career posting covers on YouTube, and has since found her voice as an artist, currently releasing singles as well as a monthly “song collection” on Soundcloud since October 2017. Her clear, sweet vocals are absolutely irresistible on her latest single “WORDS”, featuring producer maXD. With a distinct production style and captivating soundscapes, ÊMIA has all the trappings of the next big pop princess. We think it’s only a matter of time.

Lesley Barth13. Lesley Barth

Lesley Barth’s music feels like a blast from the past in the very best way. Her album Green Hearts is infused with nostalgic 70’s references, and a whole lot of heart, as Lesley croons about young love. The singer-songwriter just released Behind the Green Hearts in December 2017, which is a stripped-back version of Green Hearts that also includes heartfelt insight into the songwriting process. Take a listen to the album’s gorgeous title track, “Green Hearts”, and fall head over heels for rich-voiced Lesley Barth–we sure have.

LexiAlon

14. Lexi Alön

Lexi Alön’s single “Delay” is a brand-new 2018 release with songwriting, vocals, and production that is top-notch, top-40 pop R&B material. Like a true pop entertainer, Lexi is multi-talented. She dances, sings, writes, produces, and is majorly ambitious. No doubt we’ll be seeing more of Lexi in the near future. Fun fact: her grandmother sang backup vocals for Louis Armstrong, and her aunt sang with Ray Charles!
