New Yorkers, you know as well as we do that there is no shortage of live music in this city. 6/8 Music’s home base boasts some of the most iconic music venues in the world, from arenas to the tiniest dive bars. So with all these incredible gigs going on every night, how does one even begin to figure out which shows to hit? Well fret not, because we’ve got you covered with our monthly concert update. And because this is 6/8 Music, and everything we do here is for women + non-binary artists, this list will only include headliners with women + non-binary musicians.
So without further adieu, here are 5 shows you don’t want to miss during the month of June!
Snail Mail – June 7 – Brooklyn, NY @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Now we know this show’s tomorrow, but trust us when we say it’s worth it to cancel your plans and head over to Music Hall of Williamsburg for Snail Mail. You’ve probably heard rumblings about Snail Mail frontwoman Lindsay Jordan, the Maryland teen that has hit upon an incredible sound and simple, potent lyricism that’s had just about every music blog talking. And for good reason: the singles they’ve released in the lead-up to their new album Lush have been some of the best songs of the year, full of laid-back wisdom, wrapped in beautiful melodies. The show has since sold out, but keep your eye out for resale tix here.
Belle and Sebastian – June 8 – Queens, NY @ Forest Hills Stadium
Scottish outfit Belle and Sebastian are absolute legends in the indie world, which is reason enough to make the trek to Forest Hills Stadium this Friday. If you’re looking for a night of richness and effervescent sounds, this is the show for you. The openers for this show are just as impressive: Belle and Sebastian are sharing the Forest Hills stage with the ever-vivid Perfume Genius, and indie rock masterminds Frankie Cosmos (who released an incredible album this year that we absolutely love). Grab your tickets here.
Sidney Gish – June 9 – Brooklyn, NY @ Baby’s All RIght
Sidney Gish is at the top of the bill on Saturday for this year’s Northside Festival, a must for all music fans in Brooklyn looking to get a first glimpse of some of the most exciting emerging talent in the indie scene. And for that description, Sidney Gish definitely fits the bill with her cleverness and inexplicable style, all dazzlingly displayed on her incredible album, No Dogs Allowed. An incredible lineup of indie talent for a $10 single-show ticket? Sign us up. If you’re planning on seeing Sidney, be sure to hit up Free Cake for Every Creature’s set as well for some sweet, relaxing lo-fi sounds as well. Grab your tickets here.
Bishop Briggs – June 17 – Montauk, NY @ The Surf Lodge
Bishop Briggs has a voice that commands and captivates, and those stunning qualities only double, triple in a live setting. Listen to her latest full-length, Church of Scars, for yourself, and you’ll hear the magic within minutes. Briggs will be headlining a set at The Surf Lodge right by Lake Montauk in a couple of weeks, and get this: the show is free. It’s definitely a trek to Montauk from NYC, but a trip to the lake and an amazing set of live music is certainly worth it. Get the details for Bishop Briggs’ free Surf Lodge set here.
Paramore – June 26 – Brooklyn, NY @ Barclays Center
This may sound like an exaggeration, but Paramore are one of the best live bands active in music today. Seriously. Frontwoman Hayley Williams has been a powerhouse performer from the very beginning of her career, shooting across the stage like a lightning bolt and dazzling with her unprecedented vocal abilities. You definitely don’t want to miss them at the Barclays Center this June. If the draw of an incomparable set of old emo hits and fresh vocal-driven synth-pop isn’t enough of a sell, Paramore’s set will be preceded by hit-making altrock trio Foster the People, and incredible indie up-and-comer Soccer Mommy. Grab tickets here.
