At 6/8 Music, we try to be more than just a record label. We are loud and proud in our pursuits to empower women, amplify marginalized voices, and break mental health stigmas. Inspired doesn’t even begin to cover our feelings toward organizations working toward the same vision of equality and understanding in our society. For all of our admiration, we decided to begin a monthly feature series on organizations that inspire us to work harder and smarter toward the goal of a better present, and a better future.
SoundGirls.Org
When we first stumbled across SoundGirls.Org, we were elated to discover such an expansive and useful network of resources. The mission of SoundGirls.Org, according to their website, is to “support women working in professional audio and music production by highlighting their success and providing a place for them to connect, network, and share advice.”
The most brilliant part about SoundGirls.Org is that they don’t just talk the talk–they walk the walk. SoundGirls.Org provides resources to help professionals in the field advance their careers. They know the stats (only 5% of all audio engineers are women), and they express consistent dissent with the need for women in music to constantly defend our womanhood. For all of these frustrations, SoundGirls.Org provide resource links, internship/job posting information, and for members, access to their social network, groups, and forums to connect with other women music professionals.
Another unique part of SoundGirls.Org’s work is that membership isn’t exclusive to just women. The ratio of women-to-men users are 65% to 35% respectively. This incredible network of resources is available to anyone regardless of gender; however, this organization emphasizes the need to uplift women in the industry while recognizing the unique challenges women face in any music industry profession. Now that’s a platform we can definitely get behind.
